Avignon was the seat of the papacy between 1309 and 1378.
The Palais des Papes, erected by Benoît XII and Clément VI, still dominates the town with its high walls and massive towers, a lasting image of the prestige and power it once enjoyed as the "second Rome"
It is the testimony of a period (almost all the14 C) when King of France obliged the Pape to settle his seat in Avignon (between Lyon and Marseille) in order to control it.
