Originating in Italy a century earlier, baroque architecture was found in Austria during the 18e century its selected home. melk's abbey is a particulary somptuous example...Characteristics of the baroque style, the statues and collonades which adorn the walls and the main courtyard, the wide dome reaching skywards, straddled by two antiquated spires, the ochre colour of the abbey buildings, which encompass the church in all sides and draws together in the front in an elegant terrasse, which dominates the Danube valley.
